While beekeeping is an excellent way to establish and maintain an Ag valuation, transitioning to wildlife management provides more flexibility. It incentives you to benefit native species while still securing your tax benefits. And you can still raise bees, if you like, but without the often extensive hive requirements to maintain your beekeeping valuation.
A 1-d-1 open-space valuation for beekeeping is like any other agricultural operation: the primary use of the land must be for agricultural production, property must have been devoted principally to agricultural use for 5 of the preceding 7 years, and intensity levels of production (as dictated by your CAD) must be established. As with Ag, you must also keep accurate records of all your beekeeping activities (honey production, maintenance schedules, etc.) to show the CAD you’re meeting their requirements.
